Cyber-Bullying Laws?
Cyber-Bullying can be addressed under civil law or criminal law, based on the situation.
Civil law: This is the branch of law that deals with property rights, personal dignity and freedom from injury. Under civil law, there are three approaches to Cyber-Bullying:
1. A Cyber-Bully may be involved in defamation. This is when a bully causes harm to somebody's reputation by spreading false information about the victim.
2. Creating an unsafe environment by making the victim feel unsafe about going to school either with teasing or violence.
3. The bully would be responsible for the death of the victim if they told someone to kill them-self and they did.
Criminal law:This branch of law determines which actions are crimes against the state. In criminal law, there are two approaches to Cyber-Bullying:
1. Harassment is a crime under the Criminal Code. Harassment can be punishable for up to 10 years in prison.
2.Defamatory libel is a crime under the Criminal Code. This can be punishable for up to 5 years in prison.

Knowing what to look for:
1. Look for signs of harassment
2. Look for signs of public humiliation
3. Look for signs of impersonation
Take immediate action:
1. Attempt to identify the cause
2. Stop responding to the Bully's messages
3. Save the evidence
4. Block the bully
5. Change your account settings
Getting outside help:
1. Don't wait too long to ask for help
2. Talk to your school administrators
3. Report the Bully
4. Get law enforcement involved
